Despite Letdown, Testaverde Leads Miami to 34-0 Victory
The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes overcame an expected letdown Saturday night on the strength of two Vinny Testaverde touchdown passes and scored a 34-0 victory over Northern Illinois.
“The team was a little flat tonight,” admitted Testaverde, who completed 12 of 16 passes for 208 yards.
“We were not as emotionally ready as we were last week, and it showed somewhat,” he said, referring to the 28-16 victory over Oklahoma a week ago that vaulted Miami into the top spot in the rankings.
Testaverde left the game after leading Miami to a touchdown on its first possession of the second half.
After a 27-yard touchdown run by Melvin Bratton, Testaverde threw touchdown passes of 56 yards to Brian Blades and 20 yards to Michael Irvin, and ran 4 yards for a score to give Miami a 28-0 lead.
Testaverde then drove Miami to a touchdown to open the second half, with Darryl Oliver scoring from one yard out.
Irvin’s scoring catch, coming midway through his sophomore year, was his 14th, tying the Miami career record set by Eddie Brown two years ago.
The Hurricanes are 5-0. Northern Illinois is 0-5.
