Amity Chef rallied down the stretch Saturday night to win the $333,762 Messenger Stakes at Roosevelt Raceway and deny second-place finisher Barberry Spur the Triple Crown of pacing.

Amity Chef, driven by John Campbell, finished 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Barberry Spur. The winner took advantage of the blistering early pace set by Cash Asset to rally from seventh place. He covered the mile in 1:55 4/5, which was two-fifths of a second off the course and stakes record set last year by Pershing Square.

Barberry Spur, with victories in the Cane Pace and Little Brown Jug, was bidding to become the eighth Triple Crown champion in pacing history.
