Barry Word, former Virginia star who was the 1985 football player of the year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, was sentenced to six months in jail and three years’ probation after pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute cocaine.

Word was one of three current or former Virginia players described by investigators as small-time drug dealers dealing in less than an ounce of cocaine at a time.

Former kicker Kenny Stadlin pleaded guilty, and Howard Petty, slated to be the starting Cavalier tailback this season, is awaiting sentencing after also pleading guilty earlier this year.
