A 44-year-old man with a shotgun was disarmed by plainclothes San Diego police officers on a city bus and taken to the county mental hospital in Hillcrest Tuesday, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Robinson said police received a call informing them that a man carrying a shotgun had boarded a bus downtown at 2:25 p.m. and was headed toward Pacific Beach. The caller said the man said he was going to the beach to kill himself or have someone else do it.

About 20 minutes later, two officers boarded the bus, sat beside the man, and disarmed him. The shotgun breach was open and the man, identified as Leonell Leblanc, had a shell in his hand. There were about 30 passengers on the bus.

Apparently Leblanc had just bought the 20-gauge shotgun for $60 from a downtown pawnshop. The price tag was still on the gun, police said.
