Supervisors Ask CHP to Use Radar on Topanga Beach Route

Share

Los Angeles County supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to ask the California Highway Patrol to begin using radar for traffic enforcement along Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Woodland Hills and Malibu.

Fifth District Supervisor Mike Antonovich said speeders are to blame for many accidents on the twisting, two-lane highway used by beachgoers and commuters between the San Fernando Valley and the Santa Monica area.

The radar request came at the urging of Topanga Canyon residents, who, at a meeting with Antonovich on Monday night, complained of speeders.

Antonovich said county officials will ask the CHP and the state Department of Transportation to authorize the use of radar for one year. Officials last year approved an experiment with radar on Kanan Dume Road that has been credited with reducing speeds on that popular beach route.

The resolution also asks the CHP to provide more officers for the 10-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard. County officials said some drivers race at more than 65 m.p.h. along the route, although the speed limit ranges from 25 to 40 m.p.h.
