SportsScope : Lady Toros Battle to 4-4 Soccer Tie With Santa Barbara

The Cal State Dominguez Hills 10th-ranked women’s soccer team played its biggest game of the year Tuesday--and perhaps the most exciting ever played at Dominguez Hills--in a 4-4 double-overtime tie with UC Santa Barbara that should solidify the Lady Toros’ national standing. Robyn Queen scored with seven minutes left in the second overtime for a 4-3 lead over Santa Barbara, but with 30 seconds left Diane Manore of Torrance scored her fourth goal on a penalty kick for the tie. Queen and Jill Draper lead the Toros with eight goals apiece. They play three straight games on the road starting at 3 p.m. Monday at Cal State Long Beach. The Lady Toros, 6-0-2, broke into the top 10 for the first time ever last week.

Loyola Marymount University’s women’s volleyball team takes an 11-4 record into the Northern Arizona Tournament in Flagstaff on Friday and Saturday. The Lions, 2-1 in the West Coast Athletic Conference, do not play at home again until Oct. 17 when they meet St. Mary’s in a non-conference match.

El Camino College will attempt to win its first game and its league opener, and Harbor will try to improve its league standing in junior college football Saturday. El Camino (0-3) opens South Coast Conference play at home against Mt. San Antonio College. Harbor (2-1) plays a Southern California Conference game at L.A. Valley. The Seahawks are 1-0 in the SCC. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team, 5-4-1 entering the week, will face conference foes Cal State Bakersfield at noon Sunday and defending California Collegiate Athletic Assn. champ Cal State Northridge at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Both games are at Dominguez Hills. Northridge is ranked seventh nationally and again features forward John Tronson, two-time conference most valuable player. The Toros got four goals in three games last week from senior Glenn Strachan, giving him eight for the season. His 20 points (eight goals, four assists) rank second in the CCAA.

South Bay teams hold the top spots in cross-country, girls volleyball and girls tennis, and several teams are moving up in football in this week’s CIF coaches polls. The Mira Costa volleyball team, coming off the championship in the San Marcos Tournament of Champions, is the top-rated 5-A school, while Torrance is tops in 4-A. Mira Costa’s Megan McAllister was named most valuable player at San Marcos. In girls 4-A tennis, Miraleste is No. 1 and Palos Verdes is No. 2. Palos Verdes tops the 4-A cross-country polls for both boys and girls.

In football, unbeatens Hawthorne and Miraleste made the big jumps. Hawthorne moved from fifth to third in the Southern Conference, while Miraleste hopped from ninth to seventh in the Northwestern Conference, where Redondo remains No. 4 and Morningside No. 10. The South Bay’s other ranked teams are Chadwick, which improved from third to second in the large eight-man conference, and Coast Christian, which vaulted from no rating to fifth in the small eight-man ranks.

Los Angeles Raiders linebacker Jerry Robinson and members of the staff of Del Amo Hospital will conduct a program on drug abuse for teen-agers and parents from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the hospital auditorium, 23700 Camino del Sol, Torrance. Robinson will discuss athletic role models and the influence of sports on teen-agers’ decisions to use or resist drugs. Dr. Tony Aloia, a clinical psychologist, will discuss the family’s role in teen-age drug use. Mark Ziegenbein, an alcohol and substance abuse counselor, will talk about stages of drug use. The UCLA women’s softball program will hold a one-day clinic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at UCLA’s intramural field. The clinic is designed for players and coaches and will be run by UCLA Coach Sharron Backus. Preregistration costs $35. Enrollment at the door is $40. Information is available at UCLA, 825-8699.
