Jim Grabb, one of four qualifiers in the $279,000 WCT Scottsdale Open, upset fifth-seeded Paul Annacone, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in a first-round singles match Wednesday at Scottsdale, Ariz.
In a second-round surprise, Glenn Layendecker eliminated No. 8-seeded Jonathan Canter, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
In night matches, top-seeded John McEnroe defeated South Africa’s Christo Van Rensburg, 6-2, 6-4; third-seeded Kevin Curren beat Scott Davis, 6-4, 7-6, and No. 4-seeded David Pate downed Brian Teacher, 6-4, 6-4.
Grace Kim upset fourth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, 7-6, 6-3, in the first round of the $150,000 European Indoor women’s tournament at Zurich, Switzerland.
In second-round matches, West German qualifier Eva Pfaff rallied to surprise eighth-seeded Katarina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4; second-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia fought off Petra Huber of Austria, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Zina Garrison beat Christiane Jollissaint of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-2.
Martina Navratilova defeated Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-1, to win an exhibition tournament at Barcelona, Spain.
