Louisiana State Athletic Director Bob Brodhead and radio executive Douglas Manship were charged with violating Louisiana’s state ethics code in connection with a vacation trip Brodhead took at Manship’s expense, and Brodhead was immediately suspended with pay by the school.

Brodhead also is accused by the state Commission on Ethics of receiving illegal payments from a Manship family broadcasting company for a doing a radio show promoting LSU.

A public hearing on the charges is set for Dec. 18. If found guilty, Brodhead could be fined $5,000 and also removed as athletic director, demoted or given a decrease in salary. Manship and Baton Rouge Broadcasting could be fined up to $5,000.

Brodhead was told by the LSU Board of Supervisors to avoid any further misconduct after pleading guilty April 18 to a federal wiretap charge. Brodhead, who confessed to trying to eavesdrop on NCAA investigators, was sentenced to 200 hours of community service. The LSU board also suspended any pay raises and bonuses he would receive for the next three years.

The new charges stem from a trip Brodhead and his wife took in April to Baja California. Manship paid the air fare and accommodations for the Brodheads, the commission charged.

As a state employee, Brodhead is prohibited from receiving gifts from companies doing business with his agency.
