Road Hunting

Share

It is deer season and hunters are at it again, shooting deer from cars in blatant disrespect for the law. This year they are bolting bar stools to the beds of pickups for the comfort of violators. A game warden coming up on such a vehicle can do nothing as long as their guns are unloaded.

In Alaska, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service once required special chains and numbered metal seals to be put on fish traps to stop them from being used during closed periods. It was complicated, but it worked.

I suggest a similar idea to stop road hunting. All guns transported in vehicles would have to be stowed in a wooden box with a lid hinged on one long side. A cord would be permanently clamped to the center of the box, wrapped around it and tied. The knot would consist of 10 square knots tied one upon the other. The box would then have to be stowed in an inaccessible place from the occupants of the vehicle. I believe most deer would escape before the knots could be untied.

Road hunting is terribly unfair because deer will not run from a car. Let us hope that someone who reads this will see to it that this practice is stopped.
