John McEnroe, Kevin Curren, Todd Witsken and David Pate advanced Friday to the semifinals of a $279,000 WCT tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.

The top-seeded McEnroe needed two victories because his second-round match against 18-year-old Jaime Yzaga of Peru, scheduled for Thurday, was rained out. But he managed to defeat Yzaga, 6-3, 6-4, and then Glenn Layendecker, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.

Today, McEnroe will face the fourth-seeded Pate, who defeated Jim Grabb, 6-3, 6-4.

McEnroe, however, had a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct against Yzaga, and two violations for abuse of equipment and audible obscenity against Layendecker. The fines probably will put him over the $7,500 limit since he resumed playing in July, and that would mean a suspension from tournament competition.

Sammy Giammalva upset second-seeded Tim Mayotte, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in a match that was continued from Thursday, but was then ousted by Witsken, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3. Witsken’s semifinal opponent, the third-seeded Curren, beat Marty Davis, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany defeated sixth-seeded Stephanie Rehe, 6-3, 6-1, in 59 minutes Friday to reach the semifinals of the $150,000 European Indoor tournament at Zurich, Switzerland.

In another quarterfinal, seventh-seeded Lori McNeil scored a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Laura Gildemeister Arraya of Peru.

Today, McNeil will play second-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, who ousted Zina Garrison, 6-2, 6-2. West German Eva Pfaff beat Grace Kim, 6-1, 6-2, and will face Graf in the semifinals.
