A gaping hole appeared in a 20-foot stretch of the 1100 block of Summit Drive in Laguna Beach last weekend.
It happened when water spewed from a broken eight-inch water main under the street. The roadway split, limiting access to the isolated Arch Beach Heights area of Laguna Beach.
No one was injured, but a police car almost sank to oblivion. The investigating officer had parked close to the initial fissure, and the widening split almost took the car, officials said Sunday.
