With pomp and ceremony, UC Irvine marked the ground breaking last Tuesday for the $20-million Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering.
Orange County industrialist Arnold O. Beckman and his wife took part in the ceremonies, in which their gift to the campus was praised.
Thomas H. Nielsen, vice chairman of the Irvine Co., said: “In the two decades since the founding of the UCI campus, many significant things have happened in Irvine. None has had any greater significance than today’s ground breaking.”
The new center will serve as the Western regional headquarters of the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Engineering.
