Time Out for Royal Tan on Way to Dallas

Share

The look-alike twosome sunning themselves at the Westwood Marquis pool Monday turned out to be none other than that new fun couple, Monaco’s Princess Stephanie and actor Rob Lowe. With their similar haircuts and physiques, they could have passed for brother and sister--until Lowe took off his horn-rimmed glasses, put down his newspaper and reached over and kissed the princess. She was wearing a bright purple suit--probably one of the designs from her bathing-suit line called “Pool Positions”--and one that showed off her deep tan and a little bit of a pout.

One nearby observer overheard Lowe insist, “Stephie, you are going to hate Dallas. But we have to go.” For those of you whose social calendar is not up to date, Dallas is this year’s location for the Princess Grace Foundation Gala, set for this Saturday. Perhaps Lowe will have cheered up Stephie by then. Or maybe she’ll get happy after she makes a quick first stop with her royal family in Washington to see the First Family at the White House.

LIFE SPIRIT--The same old (and important) institutions keep popping up as the recipients of benefits. Here’s one not frequently seen--the Santa Marta Hospital and Foundation in East Los Angeles. But the benefit for Santa Marta Nov. 5 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel should turn up a brand-name guest list. Honored will be former Ambassador to Mexico John Gavin, who will receive the Life Spirit Award. And Sir Daniel J. Donohue, a papal knight, who will receive the Founders Award. One very important item will be auctioned off--Cheech Marin has donated his ’55 Chevy convertible, used in the music video “Born in East L.A.” for the evening’s raffle.

CANCEL THAT FUND-RAISER--Stars apparently will turn out to support Proposition 65, the anti-toxics initiative. But turning out just regular folks to a fund-raising dinner is apparently another story. That’s why the $200-a-seat dinner set for tonight at the 1,000-seat Beverly Hilton Hotel’s International Ballroom was canceled. One insider said that less than half the ballroom would have been filled and that ticket sales were “disappointing.” Almost no checks had to be returned, however, since many of those who had bought tickets turned over their $200 tabs as contributions.

STRIKE UP THE BENEFIT--The Young Musicians Foundation holds its annual Command Performance Oct. 24 with a spectacular produced and directed by Pierre Cossett. Conducting the YMF Debut Orchestra at the Century Plaza will be Charles Fox, Ernest Gold, Johnny Mandel, Lionel Newman and Pete Rugolo. Special guest stars Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager will be part of the show, with emcee Carl Reiner. Shelby Conti is the chair, and Jeanne Hazard and Mark Lipson are co-chairing.

PARTIES--Gathering tonight at Dick Clark’s Malibu home to kick off the United Negro College Fund’s “Lou Rawls Parade of Stars” are Diahann Carroll, Ali MacGraw, Bruce Jenner and Wallis Annenberg. Proceeds from the telethon help to educate about 45,000 students attending UNCF’s member colleges. . . . Mary Rapoport, one of the bright lights of the National Women’s Political Caucus on the East Coast, gets a birthday party here. The benefit party Oct. 25 at the home of Dr. Toni Bernay will let Susan Clark, Tom Hayden, Alex Karras and Joan Palevsky show that “they all want Mary Rapoport to get her just desserts!”
