Tennis Roundup : Navratilova Gets 1,000th Victory of Her Career

Martina Navratilova needed only 51 minutes Wednesday to win her 1,000th match, beating 18-year-old Nathalie Tauziat of France, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of the Porsche Grand Prix tennis tournament at Filderstadt, West Germany.

The only other woman to win 1,000 matches is Chris Evert Lloyd, who reached that figure in 1984 and now has 1,143 victories.

In other matches, fourth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina ousted Grace Kim, 6-1, 6-2; No. 7 Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden outlasted Lilian Drescher of Switzerland, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3; Bettina Bunge of West Germany beat Anne Hobbs of Britain, 6-4, 6-4, and Robin White defeated Tine Scheuer-Larsen of Denmark, 6-4, 6-3.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia beat Mark Kratzmann of Australia, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round of the $345,000 Australian Indoor tournament.

In other first-round matches, seventh-seeded Mike Leach topped Tony Mmoh of Nigeria, 6-4, 7-6; Brad Drewett of Australia upset sixth-seeded Christo van Rensburg of South Africa, 7-6, 6-1, and Peter McNamara of Australia defeated countryman Brett Custer, 6-1, 6-2.

In second-round matches, fifth-seeded Marcel Freeman downed Mark Edmondson of Australia, 6-2, 7-5, and Glenn Layendecker beat Darren Cahill of Australia, 7-5, 6-4.
