Tennis Roundup : Becker and Lendl Win to Stay on Collision Course at Sydney

Two-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker of West Germany struggled to beat unseeded Brod Dyke of Australia, 6-4, 6-4, Friday and reach the semifinals of the $345,000 Australian Indoor tournament at Sydney.

The victory kept the second-seeded Becker on course for a final-round meeting against top-seeded Ival Lendl of Czechoslovakia.

Lendl, ranked No. 1 in the world, eased into the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over eighth-seeded Wally Masur of Australia.

Today, Lendl will meet Australian Davis Cupper Pat Cash, while Becker will face unseeded Glenn Layendecker.

Layendecker, ranked 104th in the world, upset fifth-seeded Marcel Freeman, 6-3, 6-2, while Cash beat Cary Stansbury, also 6-3, 6-2.

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova outlasted Sweden’s Catarina Lindqvist, 3-6, 7-6, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the $175,000 Porsche Grand Prix women’s tournament at Filderstadt, West Germany.

Navratilova appeared annoyed at several calls by the referees.

In the semifinals today, on her 30th birthday, Navratilova will meet doubles partner Pam Shriver, who beat Ann Henricksson, 6-1, 6-2.

In the other semifinal match, Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia will face Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina.

Mandlikova defeated Zina Garrison, 6-2, 6-4; Sabatini beat Robin White, 6-0, 6-3.

Second-seeded Yannick Noah of France continued his comeback from a seven-week layoff due to an injury to defeat Aaron Krickstein, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of an indoor tournament at Basel, Switzerland.

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg reached the semifinals by beating fellow Swede Stefan Erikssen, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

At Tokyo, Kelly Jones of San Diego upset top-seeded David Pate, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals of the $195,000 Japan Asian Open.

Jones, who starred for Pepperdine last season, is ranked 479th in the world; Pate is 24th.
