Hermosa Approves Funds for Astronaut Memorial
The City Council has authorized $4,629 for the Greg Jarvis Bicycle Rest Stop Project.
Jarvis, a Hermosa Beach resident and avid bike rider, was killed in the Challenger space shuttle disaster Jan. 28. The rest stop is planned for The Strand at 6th Street.
The Challenger Shuttle Memorial Committee has raised about $7,200 and has received commitments of donated materials and services for the rest stop, but needs about $9,000 more.
The $4,629, allocated by the council last week on a 4-1 vote, comes from county-administered funds and can be used only for construction or maintenance of bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
Council member June Williams said she voted against the funding because “I don’t think we should encourage bicycles on The Strand. I think it’s a dangerous situation. . . . I said in the beginning when they brought it up that I was not for a bicycle rest stop” on The Strand.
