Car-Pool Lanes

Share

I have owned businesses in Orange County for 15 years and use the north- and southbound Costa Mesa Freeway almost daily and at various times each day. The majority of times, I am alone in my car. I differ from many people who object to the car-pool lanes in that I support them strongly even though I use them rarely.

I am, however, both indignant and incensed at the obvious lack of Highway Patrol policing of the car-pool lanes. I have personally observed consistently, since the opening of the lanes almost a year ago, a continual violation rate in excess of the 28.5% reported in The Times. There is no point in having these lanes if their use is not policed and enforced.

It is a great disservice and injustice to those of us who attempt to comply with the law to be subjected to such continual overt and uncontrolled abuse of these lanes. If they are not to be policed and enforced, then I would certainly expect that any competent transportation commission would phase them out immediately.
