Golf Roundup : Payne Stewart Shoots a 71 and Leads by Two in Florida
Payne Stewart overcame both a bogey on his first hole and treacherous winds Saturday to shoot a one-under-par 71 for a two-stroke lead in the third round of the $500,000 Walt Disney golf tournament at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
A field of 130 battled swirling 20-m.p.h. winds over three Disney courses--Lake Buena Vista, Magnolia and Palm--as scores soared from the opening two rounds.
Stewart, winless on the PGA Tour since finishing first in the Disney in 1983, played the 6,967-yard Palm course. He had a 54-hole total of 202.
Lon Hinkle, seeking his first PGA victory in seven years, shot a 68 to share second place with U.S. Open champion Raymond Floyd (70) and Mike Sullivan (70) at 204.
Brian Claar, who shot a 68, was at 206, and Morris Hatalsky, Tom Purtzer, Buddy Gardner and Gary Koch were tied at 207.
Butch Baird, a rookie on the PGA Senior Tour, shot a par 71 to take a one-stroke lead at 141 after two rounds of the $200,000 Cuyahoga International tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Baird said the wind made play “much tougher” on the second day of the 54-hole tournament at Harbour Town Golf Links.
Walt Zimbriski shot a 72 and was at 142. Miller Barber had a 70 to move into contention at 144.
Arnold Palmer began the day in a three-way tie for the lead but had a double bogey on the 18th hole for a 75 and was at 145.
Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros shot a four-under-par 68 and regained the lead in the third round of the $238,000 Lancome Trophy tournament at Saint-Nom-La-Breteche, France.
Ballesteros, seeking his third Lancome title, had a 54-hole total of 204, moving him one shot ahead of West German Bernhard Langer, who shot his second consecutive 66.
Five players were tied at 206, including 20-year-old Spaniard Jose-Maria Olazabal, who shot a 66.
Australia’s Greg Norman continued his march to a fifth straight tournament victory by shooting a four-under-par 67 to open up a five-stroke lead after the third round of the $80,000 New South Wales Open at Sydney, Australia.
Norman, who has won the European Open, Dunhill Cup, World Match Play Championship and Queensland Open titles in recent weeks, had a 54-hole total of 202.
