College Roundup : UC Irvine Wins in Cross-Country

The UC Irvine men’s cross-country team placed four runners in the top 10 Saturday to win the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational at San Luis Obispo.

Gus Quinonez ran the hilly, five-mile course in 24:46 to finish third for the Anteaters, who had 37 points. San Luis Obispo finished second (126 points) and San Diego State was third (128).

Richard Graves (24:47) finished fourth for Irvine and teammate Ralph Garibaldi (25:07) was fifth. Anteater Rod Curry (25:07) was 10th.

Despite a second-place finish by Beth McGrann (17:00) and a fifth-place finish by Jill Harrington (17:06) over the 5,000-meter women’s course, Irvine finished fourth with 85 points. Nebraska (66) won, San Luis Obispo (70) was second and UCLA (74) third.

In other cross-country action:

Ray Campbell and Carla Figueroa led the Chapman men’s and women’s teams to victories over La Verne at Santiago Oaks Regional Park. The men won, 20-41, with Campbell turning in a 24:04 four-mile time to finish second to the Leopards’ Danny Morse (23:16).

Figueroa won the women’s three-mile race in 20:55.8, improving her personal best by 10 seconds. The women won, 18-40.

In nonconference water polo action:

Stanford 10, UC Irvine 4--Despite two goals from Tom Warde, the Anteaters (8-8) lost to the No. 1-ranked Cardinal (22-0) in Palo Alto.

In Caltech Invitational water polo action:

Despite a total of 18 goals by John Bristol, Chapman College lost all four of its games at Caltech. The Panthers (3-22) fell to Redlands, 10-9; UC Riverside, 17-4; Caltech, 16-9, and Pasadena City College, 20-10.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s soccer action:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 2, Chapman 0--Mike Mullen and Joe Flanagan scored to lead the visiting Dons to the victory over the Panthers (2-2-1 in the CCAA and 7-7-1 overall).

In nonconference women’s soccer action:

Santa Clara 2, Chapman 1--Jenni Symons scored on a penalty kick with six minutes left in the second overtime to lead the visiting Broncos to the victory over Chapman. Santa Clara took a 1-0 lead on Michele Nagamine’s goal in the 43rd minute. Chapman (3-10-1) tied the game on a score by Maggie Reardon with 11 minutes left in regulation.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball action:

UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The Gauchos defeated the Titans, 15-4, 15-5, 15-10, at Santa Barbara to improve to 5-4 in conference, 16-7 overall. Fullerton drops to 0-8, 6-18.

Pacific 3, UC Irvine 0--The Tigers, ranked fifth in the nation, swept the Anteaters, 15-7, 15-8, 15-8, at Stockton. Pacific is 7-1 in conference, 18-3 overall. Irvine is 1-8, 7-17.

In nonconference volleyball action:

Christ College of Irvine 3, West Coast Christian (Fresno) 0--Freshman Marnie Ludwig had six kills and sophomore Meg Nitz had seven service aces to lead Christ College (8-14) to a 15-3, 15-5, 15-5 victory at home.
