Prosecutors Drop Charges Against 2 in Len Bias Death

Prosecutors today dropped charges against David Gregg and Terry Long, two men who were with University of Maryland basketball star Len Bias when he died of cocaine intoxication. No plea bargain agreement was made with the men, the prosecutors said.

Gregg and Long were indicted in July of possession of cocaine and obstruction of justice. Last Thursday, the two former teammates of Bias testified before the grand jury investigating the case.

They also are expected to testify at the trial of Brian Lee Tribble, the third man indicted in connection with the death.

At a hearing today, both Prince George’s County Atty. Arthur Marshall and defense attorney Alan Goldstein said that no prior deal was made and that the two testified before the grand jury because they wanted to.

Tribble, 24, has been indicted on charges of possession of cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, distribution of cocaine and possession of PCP.

Tribble’s lawyer said last week that his client would be exonerated of all charges against him “if Long and Gregg tell the truth.”

It is believed that Tribble, Gregg and Long were with Bias when the all-American and top draft choice of the NBA’s Boston Celtics collapsed June 19 after ingesting an unusually pure form of cocaine. Tribble is the man who called for an ambulance from the dormitory room around 6:30 that morning.
