The Big Ten has chosen not to count the 12th games played by title contenders Michigan and Ohio State this season in determining the conference champion that will represent the league in the Rose Bowl.
The league, in a vote of its athletic directors this week, voted not to count Ohio State’s opening-game loss to Alabama and Michigan’s regular-season finale at Hawaii Dec. 6.
The rest of the Big Ten teams play just 11 games. The nonconference record is one of the 18 tiebreaking devices used by the league to determine the league champion and Rose Bowl representative in case of a tie.
