College Tennis : UCI Shut Out in Tournament as Norwood and Moeller Advance

Top-seeded Mary Norwood of USC Friday advanced to the semifinal round of the Rolex/ITCA Southern California Collegiate Women’s Tennis Championships at UC Irvine.

Norwood won her third-round match against Laura Glitz of Arizona State, 6-4, 7-5. She defeated Marisa Sanchez of Pepperdine, 6-0, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Norwood plays Jane Thomas of UCLA in the semifinals at 9 o’clock today.

Anne Moeller of San Diego State, seeded second, also advanced to the semifinal round. She defeated Allyarn Cooper of UCLA, 6-4, 6-1, in the third round and Carrie Crisell of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Moeller plays Stephanie Harges of USC in the other semifinal match.

All three UC Irvine doubles teams were eliminated. The Anteaters’ Dina Trenwith and Haruko Shigekawa were defeated by Lisa Haldas and Kristy McCormick of Arizona State, 6-3, 6-4. Kathy Rose and Uma Rao were defeated by Becky Barmore and Julie Sanford of UC Santa Barbara, 6-3, 6-3.

The final UCI doubles team of Stephanie Rohrer and Courtney Weichsel of UCI were defeated by Jessica Buss and Moeller of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-4.

Doubles quarterfinals start at 11:30 a.m. and the semifinals are at 2 p.m.
