Some guys who were three weeks away from a nationally televised fight would be playing it cautious in sparring sessions.

Not Michael Nunn of North Hollywood. Sparring sessions? Forget it. The World Boxing Assn.’s No. 8-ranked middleweight is tuning up for his Nov. 21 date at the Reseda Country Club, to be shown on the ESPN cable network, by taking on another opponent Tuesday night in the Country Club’s 10-round main event.

Nunn’s workload in one year would be a career for Gerry Cooney.

Nunn (18-0, 11 knockouts) will face Orlando Paulding (10-6) of Birmingham, Ala., on Tuesday. Paulding has won five of his last six fights, all by knockout.

Nunn’s opponent in November has yet to be named.

Also on Tuesday night’s card: Orlin Norris (3-1, 3 knockouts) of San Diego will oppose Mike Bardwell (2-4) of Sacramento in a six-round heavyweight match; Troy Weaver (1-1) of Chino meets Manuel Murrillo (3-2, 3 knockouts) of San Diego in a six-round light heavyweight bout; Levi Billups (1-1, 1 knockout) of San Diego takes on Zenous Thompson (2-5) of Long Beach in a four-round heavyweight fight; middleweights Milford Kemp (3-1, 1 knockout) of North Hollywood and Tom Lillard (2-2) of Los Angeles meet in a four-rounder, and heavyweights Don Wilson (4-1, 2 knockouts) of Beverly Hills and Tim Jones (2-2) of Sacramento are scheduled for four rounds.

Mt. SAC Invitational Features 300 Schools

Hart High Coach Gene Blankenship calls the Mt. San Antonio College Cross-Country Invitational the “unofficial state cross-country championships.” And for good reason.

Over 6,000 athletes from 300 high schools will compete in the two-day meet, which began Friday at the Walnut campus.

The boys team sweepstakes race, which begins at 10:08 this morning, will feature the top three ranked teams in the Southern Section 4-A and 3-A divisions and No. 1- and No. 3-ranked teams in the 2-A.

Thousand Oaks, ranked No. 2 in the 4-A, and Hart, ranked third in the 3-A, will lead Valley-area entries.

The girls team sweepstakes race begins at 10:50 a.m. and will feature seven of the top 10 4-A teams, including No. 1-ranked Palos Verdes.

Thousand Oaks and Westlake, the second- and fourth-ranked teams in the 4-A, are the top Valley teams in the field.

Agoura teammates Matt Thomson and Bryan Dameworth will compete in the boys individual sweepstakes race, which will also feature top runners Richard Erbes of Glendale and Aaron Mascorro of Rosemead.

Both Erbes, the defending 4-A champion, and Mascorro, who finished fourth in the 3-A championships in 1985, are undefeated this season.

Raul Serratos of Moreno Valley, who finished third in the 3-A championships in 1985, and Ventura County champion Tony Williams of Hueneme will also compete.

Bob Mandeville, 25, has been named baseball coach at Notre Dame High. He takes over for John Barrett, who led the Knights to a 7-14 mark last year after winning successive Del Rey League championships.

Donna Duke of Camarillo made the 20th hole-in-one of her golfing career Friday at the River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard.

Duke aced the par-3, 119-yard 17th hole using a nine-iron in Ladies Tournament play. It was her second hole-in-one in three days. She aced the same hole last August.

Alemany High clinched an undefeated Del Rey League dual-meet season with a 19-36 victory over Crespi at Woodley Park on Wednesday.

Jose Haro led the Indians, who are ranked No. 6 in the Southern Section 3-A Division. Haro timed 16:04 over the three-mile course. Teammates Mike Thomas (16:11) and Greg Jones (16:21) finished second and third.

Alemany Coach Randy Smith said the Indians are capable of finishing in the top three at the Southern Section Championships in November. “We’re only ranked sixth but if we run to our potential we should finish in the top three,” he said.
