Tennis Roundup : Becker Defeats Edberg in Tokyo Final

Second-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany defeated third-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 7-6, 6-1, today in the final of the $375,000 Seiko Super tennis tournament at Tokyo.

In the semifinals Saturday, Edberg upset top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, 7-5, 6-1, while Becker beat Jimmy Connors, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.

Becker received $60,000 for the victory, while runner-up got Edberg $30,000.

John McEnroe, promoting tennis the way he knows best, argued with officials, cursed spectators and defeated Czechoslovakia’s Miroslav Mecir, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to the final of an exhibition tournament at Ixtapa, Mexico.

In today’s final, McEnroe will meet Emilio Sanchez, who beat Bjorn Borg, 6-2, 6-4, at the beachside town 190 miles southwest of Mexico City.

McEnroe argued repeatedly with the officials, several times prompting them to change their calls. He also became angered over responses from the crowd and at one point turned to curse them in his scant Spanish.

Tournament favorite Brad Gilbert and unseeded Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia scored semifinal victories in a $150,000 Grand Prix tournament at Vienna.

Gilbert defeated Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 6-3, 6-2, while Novacek beat defending champion Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6.

West German teen-ager Steffi Graf, seeking her eighth title of the year, beat unseeded South African Rosalyn Fairbank, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals of the $200,000 Pretty Polly women’s indoor tournament at Brighton, England.

In today’s final, Graf will meet Sweden’s Caterina Lindqvist, who outlasted unseeded West German Bettina Bunge, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

Tom Gullikson defeated Ilie Nastase, 6-2, 6-4, and his twin brother, Tim, beat Colin Dibley, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals of the $40,000 Steve McQueen Pro-Celebrity tournament at the Claremont Club in Claremont.
