Rolex/ITCA Tennis Championships : SDSU’s Moeller Loses in Day of Upsets
San Diego State’s Anne Moeller was one of the two seeded players to lose Saturday in the semifinals of the Rolex/ITCA Southern California Collegiate Women’s Tennis Championship at UC Irvine.
Eighth-seeded Stephanie Harges of USC defeated Moeller, 7-6, 6-2.
Harges, a sophomore, stayed near the baseline throughout the match, coming to the net only when Moeller’s shots called for it. Although Moeller missed a few key shots in the first set, it was Harges’ powerful forehand that helped her win the tie-breaking point.
In Saturday’s first match, fourth-seeded Jane Thomas of UCLA played an aggressive serve and volley game to defeat top-seeded Mary Norwood of USC, 6-1, 6-2. Thomas, a senior, dominated the net throughout the match, effectively surging and digging for Norwood’s strong cross-court shots.
