Alain Prost of France became the first driver since 1960 to win consecutive world driving championships when he won the Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Adelaide.

Prost became the first driver to win successive titles since Australia’s Jack Brabham in 1959 and ’60.

Prost went into the last of this year’s 16 Grand Prix events trailing England’s Nigel Mansell by six points. He needed a victory to retain the crown. Mansell, needing only a third-place finish to secure his first world championship, was forced out of the race on the 64th lap when the left rear tire of his Williams exploded.
