State Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp filed suit against Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. accusing the firm of illegally operating a toxic storage site at its Sunnyvale missiles and space subsidiary. If the charges are upheld, the defense contractor’s subsidiary could face a multimillion-dollar civil fine. The suit, filed on behalf of the state Department of Health Services, accuses Lockheed of storing various cancer-causing and toxic chemicals without a permit. A Lockheed spokesman described the charges as “administrative and technical, having to do with permits and procedures. There is no release or spill of any toxics or hazardous materials, no release into the environment or exposure of the public.”
