A 16-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run motorist at an intersection in Santa Ana on Wednesday, authorities said

Santa Ana Police Sgt. Ken Koorndyk said the unidentified youth was struck by a white van. The van’s male driver stopped, walked to the injured boy lying on the ground, then climbed back into his van and fled, Koorndyk said.

The accident occurred about 5:23 p.m. at the intersection of Greenville Street and Glenwood Place in an area at the south end of the city known as Santa Ana Gardens.

Koorndyk said the youth was headed north on Greenville in a bicycle lane when the van turned from Greenville onto Glenwood, directly into the bicyclist’s path.

Witnesses told police they saw the male driver get out of his van, walk up to the boy, then quickly get into his van and leave driving eastbound on Glenwood.

No further description was provided, police said.

The youth, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was taken to the trauma unit at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
