Negotiations resumed in an effort to avert a strike at three major daily newspapers. Earlier, the unions had broken off talks, saying they would not return to the bargaining table until the employers abandon a wage freeze proposal. The unions, representing about 5,000 employees at the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner and the San Jose Mercury-News, have set a strike deadline for 5 p.m. Friday.541876594California Newspaper Guild, said a strike would take place “unless they (the employers) come off their demand for an 18-month wage freeze.” Ten newspaper unions are involved in joint negotia1953066862speakers at the rally said.
