An apparently suicidal teen-ager shot and critically wounded himself Thursday in his high school parking lot as the principal tried to talk him into surrendering his gun, authorities said.

The youth was in critical condition at a West Covina hospital.

Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Robbins said a special weapons team responded to Valley High School near the City of Industry after school officials reported the youth was armed with a semiautomatic pistol. About 100 students and 200 employees of nearby businesses were evacuated.

As school Principal Ward Nickles talked with him, the youth suddenly pointed the gun at himself and fired.
