Lefty Driesell, former University of Maryland basketball coach, rejected a contract offer from the university to let him coach the team one more season, according to a published report.
Driesell considered two options in talks with university lawyers after they rejected his attorney’s proposal that he coach three more years, according to the source quoted in the Washington Post.
Driesell, 54, announced Wednesday that he was resigning and going to work as assistant athletic director in promotion and fund-raising while considering coaching offers from other schools.
When talks started Oct. 8, the university was willing to let Driesell coach in the 1986-87 season but required strict evaluation of his performance. However, difficulties in working out evaluation terms eventually persuaded Driesell to change his mind about staying as coach, the source said.
