PREP FOOTBALL : Orange League : Garcia Leads Anaheim Past Magnolia

Anaheim High School scored the first four times it had the ball, recording an easy 26-0 victory over Magnolia Friday night in Glover Stadium.

The victory improved the Colonists’ Orange League record to 3-0 and 5-3 overall.

The Colonists did most of their damage on the ground, rushing for 347 yards. Halfback Joaquin Garcia accounted for 150 of those, scored a touchdown on a 67-yard run and had a 78-yard touchdown run called back.

Anaheim quarterback Ernest Johnston gained 76 yards on the ground and completed 3 of 7 passes for 30 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Magnolia (0-3, 2-5-1) had 64 yards rushing and 32 yards passing for a total offense of 96 yards. The Sentinels drove to Anaheim’s eight-yard line with less than a minute left in the game when quarterback Mike Tietge’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Johnston, a linebacker on defense.

Johnston scored Anaheim’s first touchdown on a seven-yard run with 4:41 left in the first quarter. With 1:37 remaining in the quarter, Johnston hit wide receiver John Clovery with a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Early in the second quarter, Johnston connected with Clovery on a seven-yard scoring toss, and midway through the second quarter Garcia broke loose on his 67-yard touchdown run.

Magnolia running back Derrick Christian led the Sentinels with 73 yards in 13 carries. He had runs of 34 and 22 yards.

Tietge completed 2 of 8 passes for 32 yards. He had one interception.

Magnolia hurt itself with an inconsistent attack. Seven times ballcarriers were stopped behind the line of scrimmage and the Sentinels suffered a 38-yard loss in the first quarter when the snap sailed over the punter’s head.

Western 28, Savanna 0--Art Giovannini rushed for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half and the Pioneer defense limited Savanna to only 39 first-half yards before 1,050 in Handel Stadium at Anaheim.

Giovannini, who finished the game with 160 yards in 17 carries, combined with Mike Huy to pace a dominating ground attack that gained 321 yards. Huy finished with 106 yards in 13 carries and a touchdown, a 25-yard run in the second quarter.

Although Western (1-2, 4-4) attempted only four passes, one was a 15-yard touchdown pass from Huy to Jim Howell in the fourth quarter.

Trailing, 21-0, at the start of the second half, Savanna (0-3, 3-5) drove to the Pioneer 13, but the drive stalled and the Rebels missed a 31-yard field goal attempt. The Rebels did not get back into Western territory the rest of the night.

Stacy Strozier led Savanna with 36 yards in 9 attempts.

Savanna recovered four Western fumbles but failed to capitalize on them. Savanna quarterback Tony Osendorf completed 4 of 19 attempts for 78 yards. The Rebel offense gained only 126 yards.
