Billy Idol’s single, “To Be a Lover,” is the No. 2 album-rock radio hit in the country, so it comes as quite a surprise that album-rocker KLOS-FM isn’t playing the record at all. In fact, Idol’s label, Chrysalis Records, was so peeved that eight staffers armed with placards reading “Honk If You Like Billy Idol” set up a picket line Wednesday morning outside KLOS’ Hollywood offices.

According to Chrysalis exec Fran Musso, the stunt worked: “We had tons of people honk back as they were driving by,” she said.

Did this unusual show of support have any influence? Perhaps not. KLOS staffers alleged that station g.m. Bill Sommers and the program directors were “out of town” or “away from the office.” Who’s running the station? One staffer replied: “Our secretaries, of course.”
