James H. Meyer, chancellor of the University of California at Davis, announced that he plans to retire next June 30, three years before the mandatory retirement age of 67. The campus, he said, is “poised for new leadership.”

Appointed chancellor in 1969, Meyer is a recognized leader in the adaptation of management theory and technique to higher education who presided over an era that saw the student body increase from 12,000 to nearly 20,000; the faculty from 1,365 to 3,470, and staff from 2,767 to 9,327. The annual campus budget rose from $86.1 million to $583.9 million--with an increase from $19.5 million to $78 million in grants and gifts.

Meyer said last week he believes it is now time for him “to pursue other interests in retirement and to encourage the continued development of this campus as one of the nation’s most valuable intellectual resources.”
