Democratic Rep. Thomas A. Daschle defeated incumbent Republican Sen. James Abdnor in South Dakota’s “Battle of the Incumbents.” Daschle, a four-term congressman, received 52% of the vote to Abdnor’s 48% in a race that focused on economic problems that have swamped farmers and small towns.

In the gubernatorial contest, Republican George Mickelson defeated Democrat Lars Herseth, 52% to 48%. Mickelson is a former Speaker of the state House and Herseth is minority leader.

In the race to fill South Dakota’s lone seat in the U.S. House, Democratic lawyer Tim Johnson defeated restaurant owner Dale Bell, 61% to 39%.
