Democratic Lt. Gov. John Waihee was the projected winner over Republican D. G. Anderson to become the fourth elected governor in Hawaii’s brief statehood.

With 11% of the vote in, Waihee was leading 53% to 47%.

In the open 1st Congressional District, Republican Patricia Saiki trounced Democrat Mufi Hannemann, 60% to 40%.

Sen. Daniel Inouye and Rep. Daniel Akaka, both Democrats, easily turned back Republican challengers Frank Hutchinson and Maria Hustace.

In the campaign for governor, Anderson identified Waihee with the Democratic Establishment that has controlled the state government for two decades. Waihee tried to separate himself from Gov. George Ariyoshi’s Administration without being too critical and losing its support.
