GOP Rep. John McKernan, despite his stand against the shutdown of a state nuclear power plant and two independents in the race, beat Democratic Atty. Gen. James Tierney and will succeed retiring Gov. Joseph Brennan.

Brennan, a Kennedy liberal, scored another triumph for his party, defeating Republican H. Rollin Ives in the race for McKernan’s House seat.

Republican Rep. Olympia Snowe won reelection.
