SEATTLE — Former Transportation Secretary Brock Adams, a Democrat, unseated Republican Sen. Slade Gorton in a close race. With 73% of the vote counted, Adams was ahead, 51% to 49%. Gorton, criticized over his handling of the nuclear waste issue, received campaign help from President Reagan in the final days before the election.
