El Segundo : Vote Set on Retail Complex
The City Council unanimously decided to hold a special election Feb. 24 to let voters decide whether a local developer should be allowed to build a 1.1-million-square-foot office and retail center.
The Group United for Residential Rights, a resident’s organization, filed a petition with the city Sept. 17 seeking a referendum on the council’s approval of the Continental Park development. They claim the proposed office park at Rosecrans Avenue and Aviation Boulevard would drain city services and aggravate traffic problems.
The group collected 2,208 signatures from El Segundo’s 8,733 registered voters--more than twice the 10% needed for a referendum.
The council, which also could have revoked its approval of the project or consolidated the referendum ballot with a county election in November, 1977, decided to hold a special election at a cost of $20,000 to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, said City Manager Arthur E. Jones.
