A 14-year-old ninth-grader from Monte Vista High School was killed when he collided with a garbage truck while on his skateboard Wednesday afternoon, coroner’s deputies reported.
The boy, whose identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, died of head injuries about 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of Maria Avenue and Jamacha Boulevard, a coroner’s spokesman said.
The boy was skating east across Maria Avenue when he struck the side of the trash truck, according to a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol. He slid beneath the truck and was crushed by the tires.
The accident occurred just as truck driver Marvin Lopez, 25, of San Diego finished turning his truck around from the south to the north side of Maria Avenue. Lopez was collecting refuse in the southbound lane of Maria Avenue and had backed onto westbound Jamacha Boulevard to turn his truck north. The boy struck the driver’s side of the truck at the intersection just as it began to move north.
CHP officials were investigating the accident. It was not known Wednesday night if Lopez would be cited.
