An autopsy showed that Tina Chaney, the 26-year-old woman whose body was found in a Watts alley earlier this week, died of strangulation, the coroner’s office said. At the same time, Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Cmdr. William Booth said that, “after analyzing all the information developed so far,” the investigation of the Chaney murder has been turned over to Southeast Division homicide detectives, rather than the special Southside Serial Killer Task Force. Both Booth and Detective Patrick Marshall, Southeast Division homicide commander, declined further comment. However, the decision apparently indicates that despite certain similarities to 17 murders attributed to the serial killer or killers, there was insufficient evidence to assign the case to the special 50-member investigative team.
