Black Panther Party co-founder Huey Newton surrendered and was jailed in Oakland in lieu of $15,000 bail on a charge of being an ex-felon in possession of a concealable handgun. An Oakland Municipal Court judge issued an arrest warrant after police said they found a pistol in a car Newton had apparently been driving near the scene of a burglary, where officers found a pile of merchandise, including radios, cameras and cartons of cigarettes. Minutes later, the report said, Newton, 44, was seen walking a block away and perspiring. He was searched and found to be carrying a set of keys that fit a nearby car which was later identified as belonging to his brother, Melvin. They said a loaded gun “was in plain view” in the car.
