Will has shown himself to be a neo-radical in his article regarding the DH.
The reason that American League pitchers cannot hit is that most of them have not swung a bat, in anger or otherwise, since they left Little League. If American League pitchers were forced to hit, they would learn how to bunt, learn how to make contact with the ball, and learn how to be proficient enough with the lumber not to embarrass themselves.
Specialization in baseball should be discouraged, otherwise we are likely to see the next rule change bring about the same silly parade of player changes as is seen on almost every down in professional football.
