Mercenary Camp Owner Denies Role in Bombings
An Alabama mercenary camp owner on trial for allegedly firebombing two cars last year testified Friday that he was asleep when his two associates destroyed the cars.
Frank Camper, 40, told the jury that he was not involved in the Aug. 13, 1985, explosions in San Bernardino County. Camper admitted posing as someone else to gather information about the targets of the attacks but said his colleagues acted on their own.
According to the prosecution, Camper was hired by two Dana Point schoolteachers to harass a group of six former employees. The teachers, Charlotte Ruth Wyckoff, 51, and Elizabeth Leta Hamilton, 39, who have pleaded guilty to racketeering charges, operated a chain of private schools in Orange and San Bernardino counties.
Meanwhile, U.S. District Judge Alicemarie H. Stotler denied several motions to dismiss the case filed by Camper’s attorney and attorneys representing two other defendants. On Friday, the government rested its case. The defense is scheduled to begin its case on Wednesday.
