Golf Roundup : Tway Ties Langer for Japan Lead

American Bob Tway shot a seven-under-par 65 Friday to tie West Germany’s Bernhard Langer for the individual lead at 134 after two rounds of the $900,000 World Championship of Golf at Inagi, Japan.

In the team competition, the European team defeated the U.S. squad, 8-4, while Japan beat Australia-New Zealand, 7-5.

Europe picked up eight points when Gordon Brand beat Payne Stewart, 70-74; Howard Clark beat Dan Pohl, 67-69; Sandy Lyle beat Calvin Peete, 70-72, and Langer beat Hal Sutton, 66-69.

The Americans collected four points when Tway beat Ian Woosnam, 65-71, and John Mahaffey beat Nick Faldo, 68-72.

Cathy Kratzert, Japan’s Michiko Okada and two Taiwanese, Tu Ai-yu and Huang Bie-shyun, shot four-under-par 68s to share the first-round lead of a $300,000 LPGA tournament at Yoshikawa, Japan.

New Zealander Bob Charles fired a six-under-par 66 to take a two-stroke lead over Dale Douglass in the first round of a $250,000 Senior tournament at Las Vegas.

Lee Elder, Joe Jimenez, Miller Barber and Jack Fleck were another stroke back, while Arnold Palmer had a 70 over the 6,700-yard Desert Inn Course.

Ed Dougherty, despite a double bogey on the 18th hole, held a one-shot lead after two rounds of the $100,000 PGA Club Professional tournament at La Quinta.

The assistant professional from Linwood, Pa., added a one-under-par 71 to his first-round 67 for a 138 total on the 7,011-yard PGA West Arnold Palmer course.
