Community College Roundup : Golden West Clinches Tie for Water Polo Conference Title

Golden West College’s water polo team clinched a tie for the South Coast Conference title Friday with a 16-1 victory over Fullerton at Golden West.

The Rustlers tied for the championship with Long Beach City, repeating last season’s final standings. It marks the 18th season that Golden West has won or shared water polo conference titles, the last five in the South Coast Conference.

Eight players scored for the Rustlers (13-1, 23-3). Jason Jeffries had four goals and Alan Buchanan added three.

Golden West will advance to the Southern California regionals, beginning Friday in Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach.

In Orange Empire Conference water polo:

Rancho Santiago 13, San Diego Mesa 10--Darrin Haskins and Tim Phillips scored three goals each for the Dons (10-4, 19-6) at San Diego.

Orange Coast 11, Palomar 9--Mike Bunge and Chuck Leatherman scored four goals apiece for the conference champion Pirates (14-0, 24-4).

In South Coast Conference women’s soccer:

Golden West 1, Orange Coast 0--Shannon Augustine scored the match’s only goal in the second half for the Rustlers (8-1-2, 12-3-2). The Pirates are 9-1 in conference.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Orange Coast 6, Victor Valley 0--Richard Pilon, Bill Smith and Glenn Shaw scored two goals for the first-place Pirates (9-5-2, 7-0-2) at Costa Mesa.

Riverside 6, Cypress 1--Abdul Daoud and Sergio Gomez each scored two goals to lead the Tigers past the Chargers (2-5-1, 4-7-2) at Riverside.
