BRIEFLY : Carpinteria Forfeits Game to Calabasas

Carpinteria has been forced to forfeit a nonleague game to Calabasas as 1986 shapes up as the year of the forfeit in the Frontier League.

In the second week of the season, Carpinteria romped to a 40-21 victory over Calabasas, but later learned one of its players was academically ineligible. The school would not name the player.

The forfeit victory moves Calabasas to 5-2-1 overall. Carpinteria is 6-2.

Earlier this season, Agoura picked up two victories on forfeits, and Nordhoff forfeited two wins for using an ineligible player.

Melissa Sutton Goes for 12th Straight Victory

Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park, Christy Farrell of Thousand Oaks, Bryan Dameworth of Agoura and Bobby Bans of Hart will be among 2,000 runners competing in today’s Southern Section cross-country preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College.

Sutton, the two-time defending Southern Section 4-A champion, will attempt to win her 12th consecutive race and set her 11th course record of the season. The Mt. SAC three-mile course record of 17:16 was set by Palos Verdes’ Kirsten O’Hara in 1983. Sutton ran a 17:32 at the 1985 Southern Section final.

Thousand Oaks has the No. 2-ranked teams in both the boys and girls 4-A Division. The boys teams from Hart (3-A) and Agoura (2-A) are also ranked second.

NOTABLE

Detroit Tigers Manager Sparky Anderson will be the featured speaker at a baseball clinic at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Chatsworth High.

The clinic, open to players of all ages and their parents, will also feature instruction by coaches and former major league players.

The Cal State Northridge Student Marketing Assn. is sponsoring a 5K run at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. A 10K run is scheduled for an hour later. Proceeds of the event are being donated to the American Lupus Society. Registration is $11 the day of the races.
