FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Harvard’s Season Ends in Sudden Death to Redondo

The Harvard High water polo team fell just short in its attempt to make school history Friday afternoon at Harvard. The Saracens, who had never advanced past the second round of the Southern Section playoffs, lost, 11-10, to fourth-ranked Redondo in sudden-death overtime.

Redondo scored the winning goal at the 2:39 mark of the second overtime period to win the second-round 2-A playoff match.

Harvard took a 10-9 lead in the first overtime period following a goal by two-meter man John Mandel. The lead was short-lived, however, as Redondo scored a goal seconds later to send the match into sudden death.

Led by Ivan El-Sayed’s six goals, Harvard took a 7-6 lead after three periods after trailing at halftime, 5-4.

Harvard goalie Mark Patterson sent the match into overtime when he blocked a Redondo penalty shot from the four-meter mark with 11 seconds remaining in regulation.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Torrance def. Chaminade 15-9, 15-9, 15-8--Top-ranked Torrance dropped Chaminade in straight sets in a second-round Southern Section 4-A match at Chaminade.

Terry Lauchner, an outside hitter, had 23 kills for Torrance (15-0). Chaminade, which finished the season 13-3, got 12 kills and 5 blocks from Anna Suarez. Kathy Hayes had nine kills and four blocks.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Led by former Royal High standouts, Dain Hurst, Brent Hermanson and Chris Stickney, Pierce College tied for second at the Western State Conference water polo tournament at Ventura College.

With the second-place finish, Pierce should qualify for next Friday’s Southern California Community College Championships as a wild-card team. A final decision will be made at a coaches meeting Tuesday.

After defeating Ventura, 10-5, and losing to tournament champion Cuesta, 16-7, on Wednesday, Pierce won two matches Friday.

Hurst scored six goals and Hermanson added four in Pierce’s 11-9 victory over Valley. In the Brahma’s 14-11 win over Allan Hancock, Hurst, Hermanson and Stickney scored four goals each.
