Los Angeles Police have identified the man who apparently leaped to his death from the roof of the Van Nuys police station late Friday night--less than three hours after he had been arrested on suspicion of possession of the solvent toluene.

The man, David de Jesus Flores, 18, survived the three-story fall but died a half-hour after being rushed to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.

The California Highway Patrol found De Jesus Flores lying on the shoulder of the northbound San Diego Freeway at Roscoe Boulevard on Friday, said Sgt. Frank Guarino. He was arrested on suspicion of possessing toluene, a flammable, colorless liquid glue some use for illegal sniffing.

Five hours after his arrest, De Jesus Flores was released on his own recognizance, Guarino said. About 9:55 p.m., police said, Flores ascended to the station’s roof, from which he jumped.
