College Roundup : Harvey Leads UC Irvine to Win

Julian Harvey scored five goals Saturday to help UC Irvine to a 14-7 victory over UC San Diego in a nonconference water polo match at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Harvey, a sophomore, has scored 20 goals in the Anteaters’ last four games. Dan Smoot added four goals for UCI (14-10), the nation’s sixth-ranked team.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. volleyball:

San Jose State 3, UC Irvine 0--Shawna DiBiaso had 10 kills and Gina Watson 9 to lead the No. 3-ranked San Jose State (23-4) women’s volleyball team past UCI, 15-9, 15-9, 15-11, in Crawford Hall. Sue Olszewski had seven kills for the Anteaters (1-15, 7-24).

In other volleyball:

UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--UC Santa Barbara (11-4, 21-8) defeated Fullerton, 15-4, 15-3, 15-9, in Titan Gym. Susan Herman and Alisa De Napoli each had seven kills for the Titans (0-16, 6-27).

Chapman College lost to Alaska Anchorage, 17-15, 15-13, 15-5, and Metropolitan State, 15-8, 9-15, 12-15, 15-11, 15-10, in the United States Air Force Tournament at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Dana Beardsley had 53 assists, and Caryn McKinney and Tammy Light had 18 kills each in the consolation match against Metropolitan.

The Panthers conclude consolation play today against Chico State.

In college soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 1, Loyola Marymount 0--Chuck Smoot scored on an unassisted, 20-yard shot in the second half for Fullerton (8-10-2) at Titan Field.

Fullerton’s opponent for the first round of the NCAA playoffs will be announced Monday.

Chapman 3, Cal Poly Pomona 2 (OT)--Scott McCrimmon put in the rebound of his own missed penalty kick to give Chapman an overtime California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory at home, Saturday.

McCrimmon’s goal, his third of the year, came with eight minutes left in the second overtime after a Bronco player was called for a takedown in the box.

Chapman finished the season 10-10-1 overall and 4-6 in the CCAA. Pomona was 6-12-1 and 2-7-1.
